A health information exchange (HIE) is a system that can support the secure exchange of health-related information within and across networks. HIEs offer a way to create an interoperable health care environment.
Adoption of HIEs is on the rise: More than 70 percent of chief information officers report that their hospitals participate in HIEs, according to a report from the Optum Institute for Sustainable Health. As stakeholders across the industry work to implement and support HIE initiatives, it is becoming more and more important for stakeholders to pay attention to workflows and physician alignment.
